Nevada Commission Awards Licenses to Wynn

LAS VEGAS -- The Clark County Commission awarded liquor and gaming licenses Tuesday to Steve Wynn's new Strip megaresort after the casino executive regaled commissioners with his vision for the property.

Licensing for the $2.7 billion Wynn Las Vegas, set to open next month, won approval from commissioners with a 6-0 vote.

Commissioner Chip Max-field was absent.

Wynn spoke for about 10 minutes to commissioners about his past, current and future ventures in Las Vegas.

He also collected compliments from commissioners Myrna Williams and Yvonne Atkinson Gates about the beauty of Wynn Las Vegas, a copper-colored tower that carries Wynn's signature at the swooping peak of its 50 stories.

In addition to 2,716 hotel rooms, the resort at the corner of Sands Avenue and the Strip has 111,000-square feet of casino space and some 18 restaurants. It is set to open April 28.

Last week, Wynn's company revealed in Securities and Exchange Commission filings that he is planning a second resort just north of Wynn Las Vegas on the land formerly home to the Desert Inn.

Dubbed Encore by company leaders, it originally was envisioned as a $900 million, 1,500-room hotel tower expansion to Wynn Las Vegas.

Plans now include more than 2,000 luxury suites and a "significant" increase in casino space from the original concept.

Other amenities for Encore will include restaurants, convention and meeting space, retail offerings, a spa-salon and entertainment venues.
