Neuheisel Awarded $4.5 Million Settlement8 March 2005WASHINGTON – As reported by the Seattle Times: "Rick Neuheisel left King County Superior Court yesterday hoping to "break bread, shake hands and be friends" with the people he just spent five weeks challenging in court. "After reaching a $4.5 million settlement with the NCAA and the University of Washington, he can afford to buy the bread. "The settlement to his wrongful-termination suit, finalized Saturday afternoon, calls for the NCAA to pay the former UW football coach $2.5 million and for the UW to pay Neuheisel $500,000 and not seek repayment of a $1.5 million loan. "…Neuheisel left court yesterday to a round of hugs, handshakes and high-fives from a dozen family members crowded into the first row behind his legal team. Called a liar before the trial began and a crier during his tearful testimony, he was all smiles yesterday. "…University officials spoke of finality, of moving forward, of paying one-tenth of what a jury could have chosen to award Neuheisel. The NCAA spoke of relief just to settle, of 'working with the wrong playbook' when it found a blunder that nearly caused a mistrial and opened the door for a settlement. "…Neuheisel has always contended that he felt ambushed when NCAA investigators interviewed him in June 2003 about his gambling $6,400 over two years in NCAA-tournament pools…" |
