Nebraska Tribes Try for Casinos Again

NEBRASKA – As reported by the Lincoln Journal-Star: "A coalition of Nebraska tribes Monday announced their most recent effort in a more than decade-long battle to get casino-style gambling in the state.

"The tribes are working with Affirmative Public Policy Solutions, a consulting firm based in Omaha, to organize a petition drive to put the issue on the November ballot.

"…Ben Thompson, policy consultant with the Omaha firm, said the group, comprised of the Winnebago, Santee Sioux and Omaha tribes, filed wording for the petition with the Nebraska Secretary of State's office last week.

"The petition will call for one off-reservation, tribally owned Class III casino in exchange for tribes not establishing such casinos on their reservations, Thompson said.

"Class III gaming, which includes slot machines and table games, is not currently allowed under Nebraska law and the state has refused to approve compacts with tribes that would allow such gaming…"
