Nebraska Legislature says no to slots

LINCOLN, Nebraska -- As reported by the Omaha World-Herald: "A proposal to let voters decide whether to allow slot-machine gambling at Nebraska Thoroughbred racetracks failed to get out of the starting gate Monday in the Nebraska Legislature and is likely dead for 2009.

"'They don't want gambling, I guess," said State Sen. Russ Karpisek of Wilber.

"He spoke after his gambling measure failed, 3-4, to advance from the Legislature's General Affairs Committee.

"Five votes on the eight-member committee are needed to move a proposal to the full Legislature.

"Karpisek, who is chairman of the committee, said Nebraska has been losing to other states the gambling revenue that could be used to revive the state's struggling racetracks and bolster funding for Nebraska's ailing road-building programs.

"He said he has been told the state's racetracks will be finished in two years if they can't add slot machines to increase purses..."
