Nebraska Lawmakers Vote on Casino Proposal

LINCOLN, Nebraska – As reported by the Omaha World-Herald: "At least two decisions facing Nebraska lawmakers stand out as they return to Lincoln today to wrap up the final three days of the 2004 legislative session.

"State senators are scheduled to take final votes on casino gambling and a bailout proposal for the Nebraska State Fair before they adjourn for the year Thursday.

"…For many lawmakers, the casino vote is the most momentous decision remaining this year.

"…'I can't see anything that will top gambling for contentiousness and drama,' said State Sen. Chip Maxwell of Omaha, a 'yes' vote on the gambling proposal.

"…The latest version would allow the Legislature to authorize up to two casinos in the state. Although the Legislature later would choose the casino locations, it also would have to be approved by a majority of voters in the chosen county. The Legislature also would later provide for the operation, regulation and taxation of the casinos.

"With a number of initiative petitions being circulated to legalize casinos as well as slot machines in bars and horse tracks, sponsoring lawmakers argue that this amendment may be the Legislature's last chance to retain control of casino gambling in Nebraska…"
