Nebraska Governor Against Gambling Expansion

NEBRASKA – As reported by the Lincoln Journal Star: "Gov. Mike Johanns said Tuesday he believes the expanded gambling initiative scheduled to hit the streets next month is "a recipe for unmitigated disaster" in the state.

"The plan authorizing casinos, slot-machine parlors and video gambling is fueled by 'so much self-interest,' the governor said, and represents 'an ugly-looking initiative.'

"The piece of the proposal that authorizes video gambling at bars in communities across the state raises concerns about introducing what has been described as the most addictive type of gambling, Johanns said in an interview.

"…Gambling boosters and businesses crafted the initiative and will solicit citizen signatures on petitions seeking a vote on it. Two proposed constitutional amendments -- which form the crux of the three-petition package -- will require the signatures of about 108,000 citizens to gain access to the ballot…"
