Nebraska Gambling Amendment May Get Priority Status

LINCOLN, Nebraska – As reported by the Omaha World-Herald: "Nebraska legislative leaders may decide as early as today whether to give a casino gambling amendment 'superpriority' status so it would have a chance of passage this session.

"Meanwhile, the chief executive officer of the Gallup Organization wrote to lawmakers, urging them to keep casinos out of Nebraska. Some lawmakers who have supported a casino amendment said the letter gave them pause.

"…Legislative Speaker Curt Bromm of Wahoo said Wednesday that he is considering designating a casino amendment as a speaker's major proposal, which would give him authority to schedule the bill ahead of others and to set the order in which amendments are considered.

"…Bromm said he thinks superpriority status would be justified to get a vote on the casino proposal, Legislative Resolution 11CA. He said it's a matter of whether the Legislature will take the lead on gambling issues for the state or leave the issue to be manipulated by special-interest petition drives.

"…The resolution would ask voters in November to consider approving a constitutional amendment authorizing two casinos at sites that would be determined by the Legislature…"
