Nebraska Casinos Could Cut into South Dakota Casino Profits

PICKSTOWN, South Dakota – As reported by the Associated Press: "For ten years, Barb Gardner has been taking bus tours from her home in Creighton, Neb., to casinos across the border in South Dakota.

"…Gamblers like Gardner might not make such trips if Nebraska residents vote to allow casino gambling on Nov. 2. And that will cut into the profits at South Dakota's casinos, many of which depend on a good portion of their business from Nebraskans, casino officials say.

"'It's going to have an impact on our business because we attract a lot from the Nebraska market,' said Kevin Lien, who's headed Fort Randall Casino since June.

"…Nebraskans will have a chance to voice their views on casino gaming in two ballot proposals.

"Amendment 3 would allow two casinos to be built anywhere in the state, with locations to be determined later.

"…The second proposal consists of four initiatives that would specify two casinos in Omaha, with an additional 4,900 video poker and slot machines at locations throughout the state.

"…If either proposal passes, the state's Indian tribes - Ponca, Winnebago, Santee Sioux and Omaha - would then be able to contract to operate casinos on the reservations…"
