Nebraska Casino Vote Set for November

NEBRASKA – As reported by the Omaha World-Herald: "It appeared almost certain Wednesday that a gambling measure will have enough signatures to make the Nov. 2 ballot, setting the stage for an expensive and historic casino debate in Nebraska.

"After weeks with local county officials checking petition signatures, a four-part gambling proposal could be certified by the state early next week.

"…Even gambling foes acknowledge the likelihood that the petition drive will succeed.

"…For years, lawmakers and others debated whether to put a casino proposal before voters. The issue never made it to the ballot, either being defeated in the Legislature or in court.

"This year, barring unforeseen lawsuits, voters will have a choice of two gambling proposals.

"The first is the Legislature's plan to allow two casinos anywhere in Nebraska.

"…The second is the four-part petition effort sponsored by the gambling coalition. It would allow two casinos in Omaha and 4,900 slot and video poker machines in bars, keno parlors and racetracks across the state, pending approval by the local community…"
