Nebraska Casino Petition Causes Confusion

NEBRASKA – As reported by the Omaha World-Herald: "Between horse races, Laddie Hirsh quickly signs four related casino gambling petitions. He's told by the circulator at Horsemen's Park in Omaha that he needs to sign all four to put gambling on the ballot.

"Not true, said Hal Daub, former Omaha mayor and gambling opponent. 'That's very misleading, and that's very, very wrong.'

"Petition sponsors say all four need to be signed for the 'gambling package' envisioned by the Keep the Money in Nebraska Committee to work.

"…Julia Plucker, a spokesman for the casino/keno petition drive, said the circulators are trained to follow state law. She also said the circulator at Horsemen's Park maintains he read the petitions' explanatory statements to each signer that day.

"…The petition would allow up to two casinos attached to hotels in Omaha, slot machines at racetracks, about 12 slot parlors on Interstate 80 and U.S. Highway 81 and video poker machines at bars and restaurants across the state.

"State Sen. DiAnna Schimek said it is wrong to say voters must sign all four to put a gambling proposal on the ballot. They could sign petition one and three and leave the taxation and regulation up to state lawmakers, she said…"
