Nebraska Casino Measure Hopes to Get Support

LINCOLN, Nebraska -- As reported by the Associated Press: "Lawmakers pushing to ask voters if they want casino gambling in the state hope to find new support following a court ruling that gutted a proposal to allow video slot machines.

"'Hopefully, it will persuade some people to take a more serious look at letting people vote on it,' said Sen. Ray Janssen of Nickerson.

"...The Nebraska Supreme Court ruled Friday that a proposed constitutional amendment to legalize video slot machines cannot be put before voters. The court said the petition initiative was invalid because its organizers did not have a sworn statement on file with the Secretary of State listing the sponsors of the measure, as required by state law.

"That energized lawmakers who have been pushing to get a casino gambling measure on the ballot first.

"...A measure (LR11CA) to ask voters to approve up to eight casinos in Nebraska stalled in the Legislature last session, but will be revisited when lawmakers reconvene in January.

"Backers of the measure say if the Legislature doesn't act, a citizens' group will get a gambling measure on the ballot, which would limit the state's ability to control such gambling..."
