Navajo Tribal Casino Construction Expected Soon

ST. MICHAELS, Arizona – As reported by the New Mexico Independent: "Navajo Nation President Joe Shirley Jr. says that "if everything falls into place, we will see our first casino in short order."

"Shirley, members of the Navajo Nation Hospitality Enterprise board, Edward Lockett of the Navajo Gaming Regulatory Office, and members of Nahata Dziil Chapter addressed the Economic Development Committee Friday, along with Ken Billingsley, Phoenix Region III director of the National Indian Gaming Commission's Enforcement Division.

"…The proposal is to put six casinos in place in strategic areas of Navajoland. 'The biggest problem we've had is getting the land, getting the infrastructure, meaning big enough acreage not only to put up a casino but also allow for ancillary development motel, restaurant, water park for families,' Shirley said.

"…The Nation has now designated the site for a temporary casino to be located at Navajo Travel Center, Exit 325, in Navajo along Interstate 40 where traffic counts exceed 20,000 vehicles per day, according to the Hospitality Enterprise.

"The permanent casino would be constructed at the Pinta Road exit, less than five miles from the temporary site…"
