National Geographic Channel Goes Gambling

29 November 2004

(PRESS RELEASE) -- They are dazzling monuments to the American dream of easy money. The price tag can be as much as one billion dollars. They cater to the every need of rock stars and grandmothers alike. They are the world's super casinos.

This December, the National Geographic Channel (NGC) takes you from Sin City to Atlantic City to get an inside look at the making – and the breaking – of these magnificent structures. Meet all the players, from the team that built the first super casino on the east coast, to the infamous M.I.T. college students that took several casinos for millions, to the Loizeaux family that makes a living tearing them down.

Viewers will go inside the daily operations of the Borgata, and see what it takes to manage this MegaStructure.

Beating Vegas (Sunday, December 5 at 9 p.m. ET/PT)

Whiz kids at M.I.T. devise a method of card counting that takes the gambling world by surprise. It is a huge score, high times and money by the truckload, but it begins to slip away as greed leads to betrayal. As documented in Ben Mezrich's bestselling book "Bringing Down the House," see how they beat the casinos at their own game, and how the casinos finally got even.

Exploding Las Vegas (Sunday, December 12 at 9 p.m. ET/PT)

Exploding Las Vegas chronicles the demolition of seven of the original hotel-casinos on the famous Las Vegas Strip. Since 1993, the Loizeaux family has reduced these grand dames to rubble in a party atmosphere only possible in Las Vegas. For the Dunes and Hacienda hotel-casinos, the "First Family" of implosions conducted their work on live national television, and added fireworks and fireballs in the actual implosion. The space-ship-like Landmark Hotel was one of the most unusual structures ever imploded in Las Vegas, and the Sands casino would be one of the most historic. The Loizeaux clan has also toppled the Aladdin and imploded the El Rancho, which sat only feet away from a tiny motel bar that remained unscathed. And the destruction of the Desert Inn's Augusta Tower was one of the most difficult challenges ever faced by the Loizeaux's because it literally touched the building next to it.
