National Council on Problem Gambling meets for Problem Gambling Advocacy Day10 April 2019(PRESS RELEASE) -- The National Council on Problem Gambling met with stakeholders from across the country on Capitol Hill for Problem Gambling Advocacy Day. This event brought advocates and lawmakers together to highlight the importance of developing strong public policies related to problem gambling and responsible gambling. Today, NCPG applauded Senators Daines, Warren and Rosen for their leadership and commitment to problem gambling, especially in the military and veteran communities. Senator Warren sponsored the morning briefing on Capitol Hill and has been instrumental in crafting forthcoming legislation to address the issues. In the growing conversation, Senators Warren, Daines and Rosen have contributed greatly in advocating for legislation that will help provide resources and awareness about problem gambling among active duty military and veterans. "I've seen what problem gambling can do to a community," said Daines, Republican Senator from Montana. "It can devastate families and loved ones. As my father always said, no one plans to fall asleep while driving – but they do. Similarly, no one plans to develop an addiction – but they do. It’s smart to prevent it and get out ahead of the problem." Each senator was presented with NCPG’s Excellence in Advocacy Award for their dedication to helping people and families affected by gambling addiction. This morning's briefing was led by Keith Whyte, Executive Director of NCPG. "We are incredibly grateful to have had so many people here to advocate for an issue we're very passionate about. We also are thrilled that Senators Warren, Daines and Rosen are providing support for legislation that will make a difference in problem gambling, especially for our active duty military and veterans. Our work together will certainly make an impact!" The briefing included three distinguished speakers: Randy Livingston, former NBA player; Stephen Crosby, Founding Chair of the Massachusetts Gaming Commission; and Marlene Warner, NCPG President and Executive Director of the Massachusetts Council on Compulsive Gambling. Each discussed the importance of making your voice heard and advocating for legislation that will help those with gambling problems and their families. |
