Nathan's Hot Dog Eating to be Held in Las Vegas5 June 2003NEW YORK – (Press Release) -- The road to New York City runs through New York-New York Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. The most gastronomically superior competitors in the region will descend upon the Las Vegas resort for the regional finals of Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Championship. The regional contest will take place Thursday, June 5 at 1:30 p.m. on the Brooklyn Bridge at New York-New York. The contest is one in a series of nationwide qualifying events to locate culinary athletes with the skill, determination and spirit to represent the United States at the Nathan's Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest, which has been held each year since 1916 on July 4 in Coney Island, NY. The winner will receive an all-expense paid trip to New York City and the right to represent the United States in the 88th Annual Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Championship. Individuals 18 years of age or older are eligible to compete. Las Vegas is a major stop on Nathan's Famous American tour that has been launched to identify the nation's finest hot dog eaters. For the past two years, Takeru Kobayashi of Japan has won the national Fourth of July contest. In 2002, Kobayashi set a new world record by consuming 50 1/2 hot dogs and buns in 12 minutes. "The coveted Mustard Yellow International Belt, the World Cup of competitive eating has been held by Japanese competitors four of the past five years, and many patriotic eating fans feel the belt should be on American soil," said George Shea, spokesperson for Nathan's Famous. |
