Nambé Pueblo casino plans clear hurdle

NEW MEXICO – As reported by the New Mexican: "Nambé Pueblo's plans to build a casino in Cuyamungue have cleared a major hurdle: the National Indian Gaming Commission concluded that the project wouldn't cause any significant environmental impacts.

"An environmental assessment the commission reviewed says the proposed 50,000-square-foot casino east of U.S. 84/285 would house 600 slot machines, eight gaming tables, a 150-seat buffet, a 60-seat restaurant and a snack bar.

"Georgine Louis, an attorney who represents Nambé, said the pueblo set aside earlier plans for a spotlight that would have marked the casino's location with a beam shining into the night sky. She was uncertain if casino plans call for a moving-light marquee along the highway.

"…Nambé's casino would be down the highway from Pojoaque Pueblo's Cities of Gold Casino and less than a mile from that tribe's Towa Golf Course and its planned Hilton destination resort…"
