N.H. slot propsoal heads to Senate

6 March 2009

CONCORD, New Hampshire -- As reported by the Union-Leader: "The Senate Ways and Means Committee voted 3-2 to recommend a gambling bill that would bring slot machines to state race tracks and North Country casinos.

"The bill, SB 179, moves to the full Senate for a vote.

"The largest of the tracks to benefit if the bill becomes law would be Rockingham Park in Salem, which could install up to 5,000 video slots machines. Ownership interests have said they will invest $450 million in the facility if the bill passes.

"The vote came a day after the House overwhelmingly voted to kill two expanded gambling bills.

"Gov. John Lynch has said he is skeptical of gambling plans and worries about their effect on social health and quality of life.

"Proponents say that anti-gambling forces exaggerate crime concerns and argue that slots could bring the state $200 million a year in badly needed revenue..."
