N.D. poker championship continues to grow

MINOT, North Dakota -- As reported by the Minot Daily News: "When Wendy Rupert helped establish the North Dakota Texas Hold'em Poker Championship, her goal was to create a marquee event to bring people to Minot during a slow time of year for area businesses.

"With the tournament now in its fifth year, organizers are expecting a full house.

"Rupert said the event is likely to draw upwards of 1,300 entrants to the Vegas Hotel this weekend. Tournament action gets under way today and runs through Saturday.

"With $100,000 in total payouts and a $35,000 top prize, the tournament has drawn poker players from across the Upper Midwest and Canada.

"...Rupert said in the past four years, players from 32 different states and as far away as Germany have competed in the event.

"Rupert said the N.D. Texas Hold'em Poker Championship is the fourth largest tournament of its kind in the nation outside of Las Vegas. Last year's tournament had more than 1,100 competitors with Rugby's Sonny Lehman taking home the top prize of $30,000..."
