Mulvane gears up for casino battle

KANSAS -- As reported by the Wichita Eagle: "Mulvane has decided that its low-key approach to the high-stakes casino battle in Sumner County hasn't been the best strategy.

"Its City Council will meet tonight to consider a public relations campaign aimed at convincing lawmakers and lottery officials that its exit on the Kansas Turnpike is the best location for the county's casino.

"...A state casino review board will choose one casino for Sumner County. The fight over where that casino should be has bogged down in lawsuits that some say could hurt the county's chances of getting any casino.

"...Mulvane city leaders said they had trusted that two casino proposals for the Mulvane exit, headlined by Las Vegas giants Harrah's Entertainment and MGM Mirage, would be endorsed by the Sumner County commissioners. Endorsements are required before developers can sign contracts with the Kansas Lottery.

"...Mulvane has delivered a message through court action. It has sued Sumner County in Shawnee County District Court, charging that by endorsing only the Wellington proposals, county commissioners violated an agreement with other cities in the county calling for fair consideration of all qualified proposals..."
