MP Urges Parliament to Lift Whip on Casino Debate

2 March 2005

SINGAPORE -- As reported by News Channel Asia: "MP Tan Soo Khoon has rebutted fellow MP Ho Geok Choo's argument that Singapore should have a casino so as to send a message to the world that it is innovative.

"He urged Parliament to thoroughly debate the casino issue and lift the Whip so MPs can vote with their conscience.

"Nominated MP Loo Choon Yong meanwhile asked for a referendum on the issue.

"MP Tan Soo Khoon told parliament: "...'The argument that we will be left behind if we don't have a casino because other countries around us are going to have casinos is fallacious...'

"...'I ask the Government not to rush into a decision. It is important enough for us to debate it in Parliament, maybe even lift the Whip and allow us to vote according to our conscience, so that Singaporeans know where each MP stands...'"
