Most Pennsylvania School Districts Turn Down Slot Money31 May 2005PENNSYLVANIA – As reported by the Pennsylvania Tribune-Review: "As the clock struck midnight Monday, just one in five Pennsylvania school districts was lining up for a share of the state's slots pie, and lawmakers appeared unlikely to force them to sign on. "Gov. Ed Rendell's plan to cut school property taxes using slot machine revenues is supposed to pump $1 billion into schools that agree to take the money. But the idea drew few takers. "Just 99 of 501 districts statewide had signed on, while another 321 had rejected the money as of yesterday, the final day for school boards to vote on the program known as Act 72, according to results compiled by the Pennsylvania School Boards Association and the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. Inaction counts as a no vote, meaning that any districts that hadn't decided by midnight had effectively said no to slots money. "Fourteen of Allegheny County's 43 districts decided to take slots money, while 29 -- including Pittsburgh Public Schools -- rejected the money.
