Morongo chairman comments on compact

29 June 2007

BANNING, California -- (PRESS RELEASE) -- We are at the beginning of a new era in the relationship between state and tribal governments. The adoption of this compact will tie us more closely together in working for the benefit of all our citizens. It will help extend the benefits of tribal gaming to a much wider range of services for the people of California.

We express our appreciation to Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, the Senate President Pro Tem Don Perata, and to Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez. Without their cooperation, advice and support, we could never have made this progress. This completes a long journey we began more than three years ago.

The amended compact dedicates a substantial share of our revenues to the state General Fund. It will provide California hundreds of millions in new revenue to help resolve its budget deficit.

The advent of tribal gaming has brought an enormous economic boost to our area of the Inland Empire. We are very proud of the contributions that the Morongo tribe has been able to make to the economic prosperity of our region, to the lives of our employees, to public safety and to the quality of life in our communities.

We are grateful for the opportunities California has provided for the development of our tribal businesses, the improvement of education for our children, the quality of services on our reservation and the self-reliance of our members.
