Morongo Casinos Employees Form Union

CALIFORNIA – As reported by the California Press-Enterprise: "The union that represents hospitality and laundry workers has a green light to organize Morongo Casino Resort and Spa employees after a competing union was told to back down.

"The AFL-CIO, the country's largest labor organization, gave UNITE HERE the rights to campaign for new members at American Indian casinos in California, a spokesman said.

"The conflict over which union could organize these workers spilled over into a court battle last spring. But the federal lawsuit between UNITE HERE and the Communications Workers of America was dropped in favor of the AFL-CIO's ruling, which came down several weeks ago.

"…UNITE HERE filed the suit in U.S. District Court in May, accusing the communication workers union of going back on a pledge not to organize California's tribal casinos.

"Jack Gribbon, California political director for UNITE HERE, said the union has already renewed its efforts to organize Morongo workers. The operation, which includes a 310-room hotel, employs about 2,400 people…"
