More site work planned for Henderson hotel-casino

27 December 1998

General contractor the Dick Corp. plans more site work for Santa Fe Gaming Corp.'s proposed Henderson casino Tuesday. However, company spokesman Ray Brown said the work is really site-preparation and is not considered an official ground-breaking.

Santa Fe has long planned to build a casino across Sunset Road from Station Casino's Sunset Station. But a shaky bond market has stymied those plans, forcing the company to wait for more favorable borrowing conditions.

On Tuesday, Joe Schuelke, project director at the Dick Corp., said his firm will begin digging the foundation for the new Santa Fe Valley hotel tower next week. Concrete for the hotel's foundation will be poured two weeks later. "They are going to dig some foundations, and they are going to pour some footings," said Brown. But Brown emphasized that Santa Fe has not yet received financing for the project, and said an official ground-breaking will not take place until that time.

Santa Fe plans a $130 million, 290-room hotel and 73,000-square-foot casino. Other planned amenities include a 1,900-square-foot ice rink and a 1,000-seat performing arts center.
