More Seniors Looking for Problem Gambling Help

NEW ZEALAND – As reported by New Zealand Stuff: "An increasing number of elderly people are seeking help to overcome 'serious' gambling problems.

"The problem is getting so bad for some North Otago elderly they have mortgaged their homes and sold possessions, including cars, jewellery and life savings, to fund their habit, a local welfare organisation says.

"Oamaru Aftercare Treatment Trust spokesman Ivan Emslie said it was a 'very, very major problem'.

"…Mr Emslie was unwilling to reveal the exact number of people seeking help, but did say it was mostly widows.

"…Mr Emslie blamed the 'huge' numbers of pokie machines in the district for the problem…"
