More Oversight for California Tribal Gaming Compacts Sought24 August 2004CALIFORNIA – As reported by the CBS 5 News: "Assemblywoman Loni Hancock, D-Berkeley, said Monday that she would introduce a constitutional amendment calling for greater legislative oversight and public consideration of Indian gaming compacts. "Hancock said in a statement, 'The current process is flawed. The governor can negotiate, behind closed doors, huge gambling compacts that have tremendous local and statewide consequences without public or legislative input.' "…Hancock said her constitutional amendment would establish a 'sunshine' period that would require a review period of 60 days before the Legislature can ratify an Indian compact that is signed by the governor. "She said the last five compacts were rushed through the Legislature during state budget negotiations…" |
