Monthly Passenger Traffic Flat

17 June 2003

by Chris Jones

LAS VEGAS -- Passenger traffic at McCarran International Airport was flat in May, though year-to-date traffic numbers remained ahead of 2002's pace, the Clark County Department of Aviation said Monday.

The Las Vegas airport reported 3,033,610 arriving and departing passengers last month, a decrease of only 1,473 passengers from the same month a year ago.

Compared with May 2001, though, the airport handled about 103,000 fewer travelers, a 3.3 percent dip in monthly passenger traffic.

Year-to-date, traffic at McCarran was about 14.6 million, up 1.8 percent compared with the first five months of 2002.

Local air traffic remained well below levels reported from January through May 2001, however. That year, McCarran handled nearly 15.4 million passengers during the period, or about 5.2 percent more than this year's total.

Dallas-based Southwest Airlines remained McCarran's busiest carrier with slightly more than 1 million May passengers, a 6.5 percent jump from a year ago. Second-place finisher America West had the highest monthly gain with 512,673 May passengers, a 10.3 percent improvement from May 2002.

United Airlines reported 233,078 May passengers, down 1.3 percent, while American Airlines' reported 210,729 passenger total was a 5.6 percent improvement.

Delta Air Lines rounded out the airport's top five carriers with 194,692 May passengers, a 9.1 percent decrease from a year ago. Systemwide, the Atlanta-based carrier reported a similar 9.4 percent decrease in traffic.
