Montana tribes reject compact extension

POLSON, Montana – As reported by the Missoulian: "Bar and casino operators across the Flathead Indian Reservation pulled the plug on keno and poker machines at midnight Thursday, and grocery and convenience stores prepared to yank lottery and Powerball devices from their businesses Friday.

"All Class III gaming on the reservation became a federal offense at midnight, when the five-year-old gaming compact between the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes and the state of Montana expired.

"The tribes did not sign a five-month extension of the current compact offered by Gov. Brian Schweitzer on Wednesday, and instead signed their original proposal, made in March and granting them jurisdiction over all gaming on the reservation, and forwarded it to the governor's office. The governor did not sign it…"
