Montana tribal gaming compact extension offered

POLSON, Montana – As reported by the Missoulian: "With just hours to go before most forms of gambling on the Flathead Indian Reservation could become illegal under federal law, Gov. Brian Schweitzer dropped the immediate future of Class III gaming back in the lap of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribal Council, which will take up on Thursday the governor's offer to extend the current gaming compact through May 1.

"Schweitzer flew to Polson on Wednesday afternoon for a hastily called town hall meeting at the Mission Valley Elks Lodge, and said he had brought along the offer of an extension, which he would sign and present to the tribal council members for their consideration.

"However, the state had already offered to extend the current compact, and the tribes had not accepted, saying they preferred to negotiate a new compact rather than extend the old one…"
