Mohegan Sun expansion begins soon30 April 2007PENNSYLVANIA – As reported by the Norwich Bulletin: "The second phase of development at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs will add 300,000 square feet and about 2,000 slot machines to the casino adjoining a horse track just outside of Wilkes-Barre, Pa., according to casino president Robert Soper. "Officials from the Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority as well as Pocono Downs staff will break ground on the $180 million project Friday, beginning construction on a facility that also will add valet parking, restaurants and retail, as well as 500 jobs to the existing facility. "…The existing 90,000-square-foot building opened in November, the first casino to do so in Pennsylvania, with 1,100 slot machines and has been considered a temporary home. The authority bought the Plains Township track in January 2005 and announced expansion plans that summer. Construction is expected to be finished in summer 2008. "David Schwartz, director of the Center for Gaming Research at the University of Nevada Las Vegas, said regional casinos such as Pocono Downs have become prevalent in various parts of the country…" |
