Mohegan Sun donates to immigration program

NORWICH, Connecticut – As reported by the Norwich Bulletin: "Mohegan Sun has donated $5,000 to the Norwich Newcomers Committee for services that will benefit the growing immigrant population in the city.

"It's the casino's second donation of $5,000 to the committee in three years.

"Lee-Ann Gomes, a committee member and supervisor for social work for Norwich Human Services, said the money will be spent on the following areas:

"-Legal advice offered to individual immigrants by the International Institute of Bridgeport, a nonprofit organization that advocates for and provides various services to immigrants.

"-General aid such as driving lessons, heating oil payments, taxi rides, prescription drugs.

"-Conferences, such as the one held at Norwich Free Academy last year, that feature ethnic dishes and a forum with immigration experts.

"…Casino jobs have fueled a historic wave of immigration to the region, in which thousands of Chinese, Peruvians, Haitians, Asian-Indians and other groups have settled here…"
