Missouri Town Wants Second Chance for Casino27 September 2004MISSOURI – As reported by the Associated Press: "The statewide rejection of a casino for Rockaway Beach has only fueled some residents' fervor to one day hear the ringing of slot machines and rattling of dice in the faded resort town. "'We are determined. We are committed. And, we have a vision,' said Chuck Walters, who is co-chairman of the town's gambling committee. "In the Aug. 3 election, a constitutional amendment that would have allowed the state's first casino to be built off the Missouri and Mississippi rivers was defeated. Opponents got 56 percent of the vote. "…Walters, citing concern about tipping his hand too soon, declined to say what is being done to put the casino push back on track. The most immediate hurdle is the November election, which determines the number of voter signatures needed to get another amendment on the ballot…" |
