Missouri Opponents Won't Give Up21 May 2004ROCKAWAY BEACH, Missouri – As reported by the (Springfield, Missouri) News-Leader: "Opponents of a $100 million casino planned in Rockaway Beach say the fight isn't over. "Their efforts to impose a countywide vote on the issue failed when state legislators did not approve either House or Senate bills that would have given county voters precedence over Rockaway Beach's or state voters on approval of the proposed casino. "Rockaway residents who have supported the Riverboat at Rockaway through several city votes say they're relieved that the potential obstacle is moot. After years of seeking any projects to attract tourists, the casino is seen as the last resort to boost the town's flagging economy. "…But some in Branson fear that even a casino 15 miles to the east would turn off tourists attracted to its family-friendly reputation. "The board of the Branson/Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce voted to oppose the casino, although the 945-member businesses have not been polled, said chamber director Ross Summers. "The board also denied a membership application from Southwest Casino and Hotel Corp., the company selected by Rockaway Beach officials to develop the casino. "…Opponents have collected about 3,000 signatures — not checked for residence or duplication — on petitions against the casino…" |
