Missouri Commission Proposes Changes to Lifetime Ban

JEFFERSON CITY, Missouri – As reported by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: "About 100 people sign up each month to permanently ban themselves from Missouri's casinos. Saying they cannot control their gambling, they agree to stay away - or face trespassing charges.

"…Kevin Mullally, executive director of the Missouri Gaming Commission, said Tuesday that new research in Canada shows that a blanket ban may not suit all problem gamblers. Some can learn to manage their disorder after being banned for a shorter period.

"Mullally told the Legislature's Joint Committee on Gaming and Wagering that he is drafting 'a menu of options' that would let a gambler choose a certain number of years or a lifetime ban. He said he hopes to have a proposal ready for consideration by the Gaming Commission this spring.

"…Keith Spare, chairman of the Missouri Council on Problem Gambling Concerns, said in an interview Tuesday that he agreed with the changes Mullally suggested. Spare said some people need to stay away from casinos while they get over some type of trauma, such as loss of a spouse, but can return once they regain their 'locus of control.'…"
