Missouri Casino Plans Still in Play8 March 2004MISSOURI – As reported by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: "The plan for a casino in Jefferson County hasn't been in the spotlight recently, but the Las Vegas company behind the proposal and a local group supporting it say plans for a $170 million gambling, hotel and entertainment complex are still very much in play. "On March 31, the Missouri Gaming Commission will consider a bid for a license by Riviera Holdings Corp. The company's project would be developed on an old quarry site near Barnhart, 25 miles south of St. Louis. "Recently, most of the attention has been focused on efforts to develop new casinos in downtown St. Louis and south St. Louis County, but Ed Hittler, president of Voices for Progress, a grass-roots group promoting economic development in Jefferson County, contends the Riviera proposal is the best one on the table. "…Jefferson County has an option to buy the 260-acre quarry property from Martin Marietta Materials Inc., pending approval of Riviera's gambling license. "Riviera would provide the $5 million needed to buy the quarry property then deed the land to the county, whose officials hope to use the land to attract other developers…" |
