Missouri Casino Opponents File Lawsuit

ROCKAWAY BEACH, Missouri – As reported by the Springfield, Missouri KYTV3: "Opponents of a proposed casino in southwest Missouri gamble that the courts will deal them a winning hand. They filed a lawsuit on Wednesday that they hope will prevent a statewide vote on the proposal. It's another hurdle for people in this sleepy lakeside town who believe they followed all the state's laws and rules to get the proposal on the statewide ballot.

"A vote on a proposed constitutional amendment that would allow a casino at Rockaway Beach is set for Aug. 3. Currently, casinos are only allowed in Missouri in communities along the Missouri and Mississippi rivers. Peter Herschend, a co-owner of Silver Dollar City, and other business owners in Branson oppose Rockaway Beach's initiative because they think a casino would destroy the family image for the area that they've worked to create over the last 45 years.

"…The lawsuit argues, among other points, that the proposed constitutional amendment is too narrow because it would benefit only one community, when it should allow all communities along the White River to decide whether to have a casino. Those communities would include Eagle Rock (unincorporated), Shell Knob (unincorporated), Kimberling City, Indian Point, Branson, Hollister, Forsyth and Kissee Mills (unincorporated)…"
