Missouri Casino May Require County Vote

MISSOURI – As reported by the (Springfield, Missouri) News-Leader: "The future of a Rockaway Beach casino could rest in the hands of Taney County voters.

"Sen. Doyle Childers, R-Reeds Spring, has filed a bill that would require county approval before a casino may be licensed by the Missouri Gaming Commission.

"Under current law, if voters statewide approve a casino, the city where the casino will be located gets the final say.

"Last year, Rockaway voters approved a non-binding referendum asking city officials to pursue a casino.

"…Childers said he believes a casino in Rockaway would be an economic drain to surrounding counties despite state estimates of $12 million a year in added local revenue.

"…If state lawmakers approve the bill, it would give the county unprecedented authority over a city issue, inviting close scrutiny from the Missouri Municipal League, said senior staff associate Richard Sheets…"
