Missouri Casino Initiative Brings in Big Money28 July 2004MISSOURI – As reported by the Kansas City Star: "The Rockaway Beach casino issue is stacking up as one of the most expensive ballot questions in Missouri election history. "Moreover, most of the estimated $13.2 million raised to date was contributed by one man — presumptive casino developer and Springfield trucking company owner Robert E. Low. "The latest round of campaign finance reports filed Monday with the Missouri Ethics Commission showed that Low's pro-casino committee, Missourians for Economic Opportunity, had raised $11.8 million through July 22 — almost all of it from Low's trucking firm Prime Inc. Low and his wife are Prime's only stockholders. "On the other side, the anti-casino committee Show Me You Care on Monday reported a total war chest of $1.4 million — most of it from interests associated with the Silver Dollar City theme park near Branson. "…Most of the campaign money is being spent on television advertising and an extensive direct mail campaign that features full-color glossy brochures about the casino project and Rockaway Beach…" |
