Mississippi Won't Contest Casino Classes

MISSISSIPPI – As reported by the Mississippi Clarion-Ledger: "The state will not appeal a Hinds County chancery judge's decision that the state College Board can allow the University of Southern Mississippi to offer casino and resort management courses.

"'We decided not to expend the court's time to address this matter because the Legislature, if they choose to fix the statute, could do so before an appellate court could render a decision,'state attorney general spokesman Jacob Ray said Wednesday, the deadline for filing an appeal.

"College Board attorney John Maxey II said the lack of an appeal means USM can feel confident to enroll students in upper-level business courses in casino management.

"In July, Judge Patricia Wise said USM could offer a bachelor's degree in business administration that emphasizes casino and resort management at its Long Beach campus.

"… Ernie Wilson, USM assistant professor of tourism, said he believes it was right for the state not to appeal Wise's decision. He said the gaming industry pumps $500 million a year in taxes into the state's economy…"
