Mississippi University Bets on Casino Program14 July 2005MISSISSIPPI – As reported by the Hattiesburg American: "University of Southern Mississippi's Gulf Park Campus is thriving and plans to add a casino management program should only put it further along its path to success, Southern Miss President Shelby Thames said. "The matter was discussed by the President's Council on Wednesday, about a week after a Hinds County Chancery Court judge ruled that the state College Board has the authority to approve a casino management curriculum. "While a window to appeal the decision is still open, university officials plan to offer courses this fall. "Thames said the program has been given the green light by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, which considers all operations on the Gulf Coast to be distance learning - the one area that landed Southern Miss in a one-year probation. "…Bryan Billings, a financial officer at the Gulf Park campus, said he envisions tremendous growth there when casino courses get into full swing.
