Mississippi groups pushes for casino vote16 March 2007PASCAGOULA, Mississippi – As reported by the Mississippi Press: "A Jackson County group plans to start pressing the Board of Supervisors for a referendum on casino gambling in Jackson County. "The Rev. Carl King, spokesman for Jackson County United for Families, said the group will appear at the supervisors' Monday meeting. He also said he is encouraging church members to start coming to the meetings as well to put pressure on the supervisors to allow a referendum on gaming in the county. "…The referendum to determine the wishes of Jackson County voters rose after the Mississippi Band of Choctaws proposed a $375 million casino on 100 acres the tribe owns off Mississippi 57 near the highway's intersection with Interstate 10. "Jackson County last held a referendum in 1990. The vote then was for a binding referendum and Jackson County voters rejected casinos. "Choctaw Chief Phillip Martin has said the tribe will respect voter's wishes. If gaming is voted down by Jackson County voters, the tribe will not build the casino…" |
