Mississippi Gaming Committee Meets30 January 2004JACKSON, Mississippi – As reported by the Mississippi Sun Herald: "Members of the new House Gaming Committee on Thursday received their first briefing on the state of the casino industry and the state agency charged with regulating it. "…[Gaming Commission Director Larry] Gregory told legislators that overall, the industry is doing fine and that his agency isn't asking for an increase in its $11 million-a-year budget. "..Mississippi is the second-largest gambling jurisdiction in the nation, Gregory said, and the industry's 29 casinos employ more than 33,000 people and generate nearly $3 billion a year in gross revenue. "Gregory said his agency is having problems hiring and keeping qualified accountants and other specialists, especially in the Delta area, because the salaries it offers are lower than in the private sector. "…Gregory said one of the Gaming Commission's goals is to push the state's casinos to use more Mississippi vendors for goods and services…" |
