Mississippi Gaming Committee Gets Mixed Reaction21 January 2004JACKSON, Mississippi – As reported by the Mississippi Sun Herald: "Some members of the newly created House Gaming Committee met briefly Tuesday with their chairman, Rep. Bobby Moak, D-Bogue Chitto. "'I just called a few of the members together, and I've already met with some others,' Moak said. 'I think what this committee needs to do first is get all members familiar with the gaming statutes, any litigation that might be ongoing. Five of us are from nongaming regions, so we have to get our feet wet.' "…The committee's creation has been met with both applause and concern, applause because it shows state government recognizes how important an industry casino gambling is, concern because the committee's work could open the industry to tougher regulations, fees and taxes. Or, it could even reopen the debate over whether gambling should be legal in Mississippi. "There's certainly some fear among those who are supportive of gaming," said Rep. Michael Janus, R-Biloxi, a member of the new committee who met with Moak on Tuesday…" |
