Mississippi Gaming Commission Proposes Vendor Report

JACKSON, Mississippi – As reported by the Associated Press: "The Mississippi Gaming Commission has introduced a proposal that casinos make confidential reports - protected from the public gaze and media - about how many Mississippi vendors the casinos contract.

"'It's not a quota; it doesn't dictate purchasing,' Gaming Commission chairman Len Blackwell of Gulfport reassured the jam packed hearing. 'It simply encourages doing business in Mississippi.'

"Casino lawyers and corporate executives, accompanied by attorneys, trooped to the microphones to protest the proposal.

"Several small Mississippi business owners, who came alone without counsel, spoke in favor of the regulation.

"…Tom Sawyer, co-founder of Gulfport's Sawyer Foster Insurance Group, welcomed the reporting proposal because it may spur casinos to consider the advantages of contracting local firms that know the territory…"
