Mississippi Commission Tracks Casino Spending

MISSISSIPPI – As reported by the Mississippi Sun Herald: "The Mississippi Gaming Commission has started a new program that it hopes will lead casinos to spend more money with Mississippi vendors.

"Beginning this month, the 29 state-regulated casinos will have to file quarterly reports with the commission, detailing how much they spent with Mississippi companies.

"…The Mississippi Gaming Association, which represents state casinos, estimates that casinos spend $1 billion on goods and services to stock their gambling floors, restaurants, bars, hotels and meeting rooms. That money is spread among about 30,000 vendors nationwide. The association figures only 10 percent of sales go to Mississippi vendors.

"…The Gaming Commission has been working for a year to increase the share going to state businesses, [Larry Gregory, executive director of the Gaming Commission] said, even meeting with casino executives in Las Vegas. Vendor fairs for small- and minority-owned businesses were held across the state…"
