Mississippi Commission Reviews Casino Spending

MISSISSIPPI – As reported by the Mississippi Clarion-Ledger: "The Mississippi Gaming Commission is reviewing information from the 29 state-regulated casinos about dollars spent with Mississippi vendors in 2004.

"It's the commission's first step in determining how much business Mississippi casinos do with in-state vendors and the goods and services vendors supply.

"Mississippi vendors received about $500 million for products and services provided to the gaming industry in 2004, according to the Gaming Association.

"Casinos submitted the amounts they spent with Mississippi vendors last year in a variety of categories such as food and beverage, laundry and linens, maintenance, advertising and professional services.

"Jose Lewis Oakley, general manager at Isle of Capri in Natchez, estimates about 30 percent of the vendors the casino uses are Mississippi companies.

"…J.M. Digital Corp., which has been in business since 2001, owes its initial success to Isle of Capri in Natchez, its first customer, she said.

"..Former commission chairman Len Blackwell of Gulfport suggested regulations governing vendors, but gaming representatives and lawyers called them unnecessary…"
