Mississippi Casinos Take Hit

BILOXI, Mississippi – As reported by the Biloxi Sun Herald: "Coast casino revenues took a hit in August despite the reopening of three properties that were expected to grow the market.

"Casinos reported $68.2 million compared to $74.6 million for the prior month, an 8.6 percent decrease. The Mississippi State Tax Commission released the August report today.

"Gambling revenues typically dip in August as people focus on getting their children back to school instead of going on vacations, but the reopening of three casinos should have increased business.

"…Steve Richer, the executive director of the Mississippi Gulf Coast Convention & Visitors Bureau, said he had been aware of softness in the market because many of the insurance adjusters and other workers on long-term assignments related to Hurricane Katrina have checked out of hotels. The challenge now is to attract more traditional tourists to the Coast, he said…"
