Mississippi Casinos Court Minority Businesses

GULFPORT, Mississippi – As reported by the Mississippi Sun Herald: "Casino companies are courting minority businesses and promoting their successes as they try to head off set-aside requirements and vendor reporting.

"Some other states with legalized gambling have enacted such measures, and the Mississippi Gaming Commission considered a similar proposal last year. Casinos opposed the proposal, which would have required them to file reports on money spent with minority and women-owned businesses.

"Gambling companies opted to voluntarily increase their contacts by sponsoring workshops, hiring diversity coordinators and doing other outreach efforts. Casino Magic Bay St. Louis, Beau Rivage and Caesars Entertainment have all touted their successes to the media.

"Howard Sanders, the only black on the three-member Gaming Commission, said he would still like to see actual numbers…"
