Mississippi casino referendum proposed13 February 2007PASCAGOULA, Mississippi – As reported by the Mississippi Press: "The Board of Supervisors will ask the Legislature to approve a non-binding referendum in Jackson County on a proposed Choctaw-owned casino and gambling on the November ballot. "'We stand by our Board attorney,' Supervisor Tim Broussard said. 'We believe the law is absolutely clear and this can tie into the upcoming election. It would make no sense to spend public money for a special election.' "Board attorney Paula Yancey said the issue of holding a a non-binding vote concerning casinos is cut and dry. "…Supervisor Frank Leech clarified that, if granted, the election ballot will read 'Are you opposed to gaming in Jackson County?' and 'Are you opposed to Indian gaming in Jackson County?' "Supervisor John McKay added that the public would not be required to seek signatures supporting the addition of the questions to the election…" |
