Mississippi Casino Plan Receives Positive Review

LOUISIANA – As reported by the Louisiana Times-Picayune: "The Isle of Capri has revised its plan for a riverboat casino on the Mississippi River batture in Elmwood and has received a more positive review from the Army Corps of Engineers.

"The company's initial plan, shown to regulators Aug. 20, raised concerns that the project would contribute to flooding and levee damage.

"But corps engineers looked informally at the redesigned plans Friday and liked what they saw.

"'Everything is conceptual, and we have nothing on paper. I would call this a first step,' said Brian Keller, the corps' New Orleans district operations manager for completed work, who ultimately must sign a 'letter of no objection' before a corps permit can be issued.

"…Instead of suggesting moving the ship into the river, a plan that would face close scrutiny from the U.S. Coast Guard and politically powerful river pilots groups concerned with navigation, casino engineers have reduced the size and the height of the planned cofferdam.

"…The new plan also proposes moving the cofferdam farther from the river and placing it adjacent to the parking structure…"
